African American v. Black American

A touchy subject, but one that tends to hang around and can't be put to rest. Tell me what you guys think...

Tanya,
I love Smokey Robinson, was raised in a very integrated neighorhood in Detroit proper , not a suburb, more of my friends then and ever since then have been Black than White. I totally identified with Smokey's description of the "progression" of terms used by and for those people whose heritage at one time or another was native African. I am only one generation from being a German immigrant but to call myself "German American" is not who I am. I am an American, less
hyphenated American than any of my Black friends. My husband is of very recent Native heritage...the Original Americans, but he does not go by Native American or even Chipawa American. My 6 adopted children are Asian by birth and American by adoption. Our bio-babes are of German and Italian imigrant heritage, but American and more concerned with claiming Louisiana as "home" than our original Michigan or our current home state of Oklahoma. Our Ghanaian children, when they ARE my children, will be African by birth, but will be Americans after their adoptions. We will always be open and informing about where all
of our family members came from...before. I don't know of any other country where the people are so quick to label others as hypenated Whatevers............
My family is one of blended heritage, but we are Americans, and 4 letter words and all, I agree with my Motown idol!!
